Pop Ups are not only a flexible sales channel, but also a brand experience platform, allowing customers to get up close and personal with your brand and offerings in a temporary and flexible set-up, fully controlled by you. For a lot of digital-first brands, physical Pop-Ups are the medium of choice - to provide an actual touch-feel-try experience, and differentiate themselves from the competition!
Having said this, a lot goes into the making of a successful experiential Pop Up, from getting the venue right, to the design and installation, and of course the final execution.
We’ve put together a list of 5 unique Pop-Ups by brands across the world for you to get inspired and get going from!
1. Barkshop Live, Manhattan (USA)
An online subscription box and gift store for pets, BarkShop.com took a wise decision to set house in Manhattan through temporary retail spaces aka Pop Ups to give their customers and their furry friends an opportunity to experience their products in all their glory for the first time before placing orders for them, the opposite of how websites work. A device was attached to the dogs which gave suggestions about their preferences and gave potential customers more insight into what could be great purchases. Along with this, the company could test the possibility, favourability and future of brick and mortar shops for their business.
2. COS, Los Angeles (USA)
To reflect and emphasise the minimalistic and simplistic designs of the fashion label; COS, their pop up was made to have 2 identical, monochromatic rooms which drew instant attention towards the 2 shelves of clothing as the main articles of focus instead of allowing the customers to dwell on anything else whose presence could distract them.
3. Fast Food Aid, Tokyo (Japan)
To promote a healthier eating lifestyle to the junk-food loving residents of Harajuku, organic food chain Dohtonbori launched a popup called fast food aid where the concept was to give people dietary supplements in exchange for their junk food receipts for restoring the lost nutrients in their bodies! This not only spread awareness about the value and functions of different nutritional metrics but also gave people the chance to do something about it.
4. BirchBox, New York (world-wide tour)
A beauty-based subscription box company, BirchBox set up shop in different countries as part of their tour where they had “try bars” to allow customers to pick and choose from a selection of products and take it home as their custom-made beauty box.
5. Solve, Minneapolis (USA)
To make their intern-hiring process less mundane and more fun, the company Solve went on a tour of several colleges campuses by setting popups which were miniature replicas of their actual office! Whoever could solve a quick 5-minute practical problem given was offered on the spot interview opportunities. Guess what? Their number of applications actually tripled than usual!
